legalizing gay marriage is important yes. but please stop picking and choosing the pretty parts of my oppression you want to support. because the systematic oppression of queer folk is not limited to “oh they just can’t get married.” queer people are getting thrown out of their homes. dying. committing suicide. getting denied jobs. you can’t just slap a rainbow on a shirt and say you’re an ally
Step 1: Comment on a woman’s attractiveness on every single occasion in every single venue no matter how irrelevant it is. Build up a dating culture entirely dependent on a female’s beauty. Teach children that only attractive women will ever get anywhere in life, will ever be praised, will ever find love and have a family, will ever have a chance at happiness, are worth knowing, are worth being.
Step 2: Mock women for caring about how they look. Call them shallow.
If I were to describe the new wave of cartoons, namely Adventure Time, Steven Universe, Gravity falls and the like, in one word it’d be healthy.
I’m constantly wowed by how meticulously healthy and sensible the relationships and discourse are for the characters. Like I’m actually hopeful for what younger people learn and keep with them from watching these shows.
“This sentence has five words. Here are five more words. Five-word sentences are fine. But several together become monotonous. Listen to what is happening. The writing is getting boring. The sound of it drones. It’s like a stuck record. The ear demands some variety. Now listen. I vary the sentence length, and I create music. Music. The writing sings. It has a pleasant rhythm, a lilt, a harmony. I use short sentences. And I use sentences of medium length. And sometimes, when I am certain the reader is rested, I will engage him with a sentence of considerable length, a sentence that burns with energy and builds with all the impetus of a crescendo, the roll of the drums, the crash of the cymbals—sounds that say listen to this, it is important.”—
I try to be as fair and unbiased as possible when taking a look at controversial media (particularly media that is considered controversial for reasons related to sexism, sexual assault and rape) because it is an issue that is extremely close to me as both a victim of rape and, frankly, a person in general. When Kill la Kill was first subbed and introduced to English-speaking audiences it was received with mixed reviews. Some hailed it as a piece of revolutionary, feminist media and others criticized it for being sexist and damaging to people everywhere.
Under normal circumstances, I would wait until the entire show had aired before passing judgment but after watching some 16 episodes of Kill la Kill I have come to a conclusion, and unfortunately it is not a positive one.
